Hi there, this tutorial is only a quickie and almost just allowing a download material. I’m going to give you an idea of how to create a tatami mat which is Japanese traditional flooring material. I hope you all enjoy the tutorial and wish the bad things right now in Japan will be resolved safely as soon as possible.
Here’s a PSD file (sorry it might be a bit messy!). You can find out how the all textures and effects are organised.
As usual, I started off by creating a path data by using Illustrator. I made a very simple path like below.

As for textures I used two patterns I made by myself. Tatami is made by knitting Igusa grass therefore I used vertical and horizontal textures for it. The first one is very simple and canvas size is 1*2. I filled only one pixcel by black.

The other one is vertical lines which is white and black on transparent 10*1 canvas.

The vertical lines on the upper area of the tatami should be going toward the vanishing point so I had to transform the vertical pattern. So I made the layer with the layer style (pattern overlay) transformable by creating a new blank layer and made them together.(This applies the pattern to the unified layer as a bitmap data.)

That’s what I can tell you right now, for more details, check the PSD file out and I’m happy to answer any question in case you get confused.

See you!
